WORDS BY FAITH LEMASTERS
The UN recently hosted the COP26 meeting in which world leaders gathered to discuss our current climate crisis and tangible solutions.
The goal is to reach a climate temperature of 1.5C, per the Paris Agreement. Actions taken will include better access and affordability of electric cars, increase of wind and solar energy, and the phasing out of fossil fuels. Not only will these steps help protect our environment, but they will result in cleaner air and healthier crops, thus protecting our health as well!
As of right now, the United Kingdom is responsible for negotiations. This is a year-long agreement which will run until November 2022, with the Egyptian government taking over after. The UK is dedicated to ensuring that countries in agreement aren’t just giving lip-service, rather, they will be held accountable to take the necessary steps through policy and action to begin the process of healing and protecting our environment.
At the moment, the biggest hurdle exists for developing countries, as they are striving to overcome financial barriers. Because of this, developed countries have agreed to double their funding in order to assist them in their efforts. With everyone working together, we can all strive to improve our environment and slow the climate crisis!
